A new policy by Horry-Georgetown Technical College : New employees must undergo criminal background checks which includes revealings of criminal convictions, arrest warrants, sex offenses and traffic violations. This check will be conducted by a third party which will not apply to current faculty and staff.

In addition, employees who deal with minors, such as those involved in the Educational Talent Search Program to help middle and high school students reach college, also were checked.

IMO, it looks like background checks are really gaining importance. This move could form a precedence for other colleges to follow. If this is the case, prospective employees should conduct self-checks on one’s profile.

The HGTC’s background checks compile compile information from state and federal criminal records with results coming in within a day.

The cost of $35 to $40 per check is worth it, said Ronald Talbert, one of nine area commission members who approved the new policy.
“It’s money well spent,” he said.

The new policy is part of the college’s overarching effort to improve student safety, he said.

“We always want to err on the side of caution,” Thompson said. “You can never be too safe.”
